"Aufnahme"

Part of the epoch-making release of Mozart's complete operas on DVD, Pierre Audi's production of this blithe fable suggests an operatic Garden of Eden, enhanced by the primary-coloured, storybook desighns of Karel Appel. The tale of two young men undergoing a rite of passage to win their perfect spouse inspired Mozart's most tuneful yet sublime score - superbly brought to life by Riccardo Muti and a distinguished cast of international soloists.
Laufzeit: 176 Minuten

Fiordigli - Ana Maria Martinez
Dorabella - Sophie Koch

Despina - Helen Donath
Don Alfonso - Sir Thomas Allen
Konzertvereinigung Wiener Staatsopernchor
Wiener Philharmoniker
Conductor: Manfred Honeck

Part of the epoch-making release of Mozart's complete operas on DVD, "Cosi fan tutte" is the once scandalous "School for Lovers", whose surpassingly beautiful score only rescued the opera's fortunes in the last half century. The young Ferrando and Guglielmo bet their avuncular but synical friend Don Alfonso that their respective fiancées Dorabella and Fiordiligi will always be faithful. But Alfonso's ingenious game is to prove otherwiese. Ursel and Karl-Ernst Herrmann's production adds an extra dimension, as the ladies overhear the plotting and so enter the drama with their eyes fully open. But the result only demonstrates that love is an eternal but also an eternally dangerous game.

Part of the epoch-making release of Mozart's complete operas on DVD, Martin Kusej's production presents Mozart's greatest and darkest drama as a twentieth-century morality tale, set in a world where images of female sexuality constantly surround us. Far from the traditional romantic lothario, "we despire Don Giovanni" for his cynical denial of the feeling of his fellow human beings, and welcome his demise at the hands of his alter ego, Leporello. The great American baritone Thomas Hampson takes the title role, heading a distinguished cast of international soloists.

"Claus Guth's production unites the two disparate worlds as though they had always been one... Ivor Bolton drew fresh, immediate playing from the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra... an excellent cast" (Financial Times)

Part of the epoch-making release of Mozart's complete operas on DVD, "Idomeneo" was the twenty-five-year-old composer's first mature masterpiece. Based on a tale in Homer's "Odyssey", the island of Crete is the setting for a drama of young love thwarted, jealous rivalry and a timely "deus ex machina" to see all ends as it should. To this traditional opera seria Mozart brings prodigally inventive and highly dramatic music, with Ursel and Karl-Ernst Herrmann bringing this dramatic intensity to the fore through a spacious set and striking, modern-day costumes. Ramon Vargas is Idomeneo, King of Crete, heading a distinguished cast of international soloists.

The second "odyssey" in Salzburg's Irrfahrten trilogy is a journey to Mozart's inner soul, interweaving text and film with instrumental, vocal and symphonic pieces. "One could become addicted to these ethereal sounds" (Salzburger Nachrichten).

The last "odyssey" juxtaposes two unfinished comic operas, L'oca del Cairo and Lo sposo delusa, with the overwhelming Requiem Mozart died before completing. "A considerable music-dramatic achievement... A tremendous success for the ensemble" (Kronen Zeitung).

Hilarity mingles with passionate emotions when Belfiore believes he has killed his lover in a fit of jealousy but then encounters her disguised as gardener Sandrine. Famed filmmaker Doris Dörrie directs a superb young cast in this tale of love, hate and intrigue across class barriers, all vividly depicted by Mozart's astonishingly rich and varied music.

Composed in 1772 for Milan, this opera seria about the Roman dictator Lucius Silla is excepionally rich musically, with strong characters and ravashing arias - the culmination of young Wolfgang's long Italian visits. In this strikingly original production, "Julia Kleiter's singing of her arias is pitch-perfect, with bell-like clarity and palpable involvement. And Roberto Saccà as Lucio Silla lets us sense the tyrant's dangerouus unpredictability with every fidget" (Die Presse, Vienna).

In Mozart's rarely staged music drama, the goddesses of virtue and earthly happiness appear to Roman commander Scipio in a dream and demand the choose between them. This 2006 Salzburg Festival presentation was acclaimed as "wonderfully refreshing theatre" (Der Standard). "The flights and self-confidence of a young composer making his break-through are apparent throughout... That also applies to the name-part, mastered by tenor Blogoj Nacoski with astonishing brilliance" (Frankfurter Rundschau).

"Reviving the 2004 Mannheim staging was a brilliant stroke by this year's Salzburg Festival ... an ironically reflected and directed play about love, desire, dreams and politics." (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

MOZART - BETULIA LIBERATA

Ozia - Jeremy Ovenden

Conductor: Christoph Poppen

Is the assassination of a tyrant legitimate? That is the theme of "Betulia liberata", based on the murder of Nebuchadnezzar's commander Holofernes by the Jewish widow Judith. Mozart had high regard for this seldom heard early work. In this "constantly riveting" (Münchner Merkur) Salzburg presentation, Judith's arias are sung by Marijana Mijanovic "with glowing ccontralto timbre ... Technically flawless, soprano Julia Kleiter put body and soul into every note" (Salzburger Volkszeitung)

Part of the epoch-making release of Mozart's complete operas on DVD, Mitridate was his first stage masterpiece, a classic opera seria of power and desire in which the paranoid King Mithridates and his two sons vie for the love and hand of the beautiful Aspasia. Set in a prison-like courtyard beneath a vast mirror and a chorus of cloned Mozarts, Günter Krämer's updated production accompanies Mozart's technically demanding and impassioned arias with a mixture of expressionism and modern manners that brings the characters' interactions excitingly alive.

"La finta semplice" is a comedy of love overcoming obstacles through deceit, with roots in commedia dell'arte. Mozart was 12 when he composed this "odyssey" (Irrfahrt) about people all yearning for martial bliss - except the eccentric Cassandro. But heroine Rosina wins his heart with feigned simplicity (hence the opera's title). "Marlin Hartelius is outstanding as enchanting Rosina... as is Matthias Klink as bungling Polidoro... The Salzburg Camerata under Michael Hofstetter make a fresh Mozart sound" (Kronen Zeitung).

Mozart's first two dramatic works are seen here in the Great Hall of Salzburg University where they were first performed in 1767. This delightful Salzburg Mozarteum presentation was hailed by critics: "Behind the unabashedly popular theatrical burlesque were the cleanly articulated, clearly produced voices and pearling coloratura of young alumni and students of the university, who already could easily take on greater competition.. How gratifying to find such talent" (Salzburger Nachrichten)
